What
is Acupuncture?
In China, Acupuncture has been a major part of primary healthcare for the
last 5000 years and is an element of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It
is used to prevent and treat disease and relieve pain. The symptoms an
individual presents with are a reflection of an underlying pattern of
disharmony which can arise from factors such as constitution, diet, climate
and emotions. Acupuncture treats the whole person with their problems and
not just the symptom or condition in isolation. It is the strength of this
combined and holistic approach which can help to encourage a significant
change. "The disease may be the same, but the people suffering it are
different".
Energy channels ("meridians") flow over the surface of the body and any
disruption to the flow disturbs the balance and leads to illness. Each
channel is associated with a specific organ and when an illness (on a
physical or emotional level) affects that organ, it can be reflected in the
state of the channel it travels through. Acupuncturists can improve the flow
of the life energy 'Qi' by needling points on these channels, which can
positively affect the state of the organs.
Acupuncture is now recognised as an effective form of medicine here in
Britain. Some people come to acupuncture as their first choice of health
care while others find it beneficial alongside other medicine or following
different treatments.
